"Microbloggingis a form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates and publish the either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user". Definition from micro-blogging entry in wikipedia.
Twitter is a popular micro-blogging tool that lets you post from the web, from your cellphone and from specialized programs (e.g., Twhirl or Loopt), which you can download to your computer or phone.
Twitter postings are written for anybody who "follows you" so they are usually written with a group in mind (although the tool makes you construct groups one individual at at time). You can turn on a privacy control.
Twitter posts are declarative so they can feel like an on-the-spot publishing tool, but their cumulative effect is to give the feeling of interaction with others in a kind of indirect way even though a twitter post can be directed at one individual.
Easy sign-up. The tools also does NOT require that someone become a member of Twitter to follow someone (assuming privacy controls are not turned on). For example anyone can read http://www.twitter.com/calstat
Signing up for Twitter adds the convenience of seeing the "tweets" of others you are following show up on your home page.
Good way to send updates, announcements, request and hear updates, stay in touch.
Could be used to gather data points, say, every half hour during a whole day from a small group of CALSTAT members -- so that others would know what a "day in the life" really is like.
Could be used as a quick way for parent input.
Some challenges include it might be difficult to control is classroom, security/ethics, firewall issues.
